Rudy and Juanita Rasmus founded the Bread of Life, Inc. (a not for profit corporation) in December of 1992 and began serving one hot meal weekly that eventually led to serving 500 meals per day to the homeless in the sanctuary at St. John’s. Years later the Bread of Life has changed the landscape of Downtown Houston providing an array of services to families in peril and homeless individuals. The project has been on the forefront of HIV/AIDS prevention, providing solutions to food insufficiency, housing the homeless, and disaster relief. For many years Rudy has coordinated domestic and global anti-hunger initiatives in conjunction with Beyoncé’s concert tours and most recently teamed up with Tina Knowles Lawson and Beyoncé to help 40,000 flood victims in the wake of Hurricane Harvey in Houston.
In addition to addressing issues of health and disaster relief, Rudy and Juanitalaunched the Temenos Community Development Corporation in 2006 and have completed over $30million in housing development projects for the previously homeless in Downtown Houston. The Temenos CDC portfolio includes the Knowles-Temenos Apartments, a 43-unit Single Room Occupancy development, the 80-unit Temenos II Apartments both designed to provide permanent living accommodations for formerly homeless individuals, and the Temenos III Apartments designed for chronic inebriates and the most vulnerable homeless individuals in the Houston community.
The Rasmus’ have served on the boards of the United Way of Great Houston, Houston Graduate School of Theology, Renovare Inc., The Coalition for the Homeless of Houston and Harris County, Liberty Bank, and many other great organizations over the years.
